Core Instruction

In small groups, discuss the responses in the forum. What level of understanding does your group have of the different types of governments? Are there conflicting definitions about a type of government? Why do you think that democracy was not added amongst these types of government?

Use the following readings to check your understanding of one of the types of governments (assigned to your group by your teacher) and summarize the main points. Come to consensus as a group about the main ideas that describe this type of government and prepare to share with your classmates.

Government Types - Student Handout
When all the groups have completed summarizing their assigned type of government, divide up so each member of your group is with a new group that has each of the five types of government represented. In these new groups, explain to your new groups members the characteristics of the type of government by providing your summary as well as explanations and examples. Use the following note sheet to complete this task.

Note Sheet - Comparing Types of Governments
When your group is done, take a moment for individual reflection. How would you change or add to your thoughts in today's forum post? Were you accurate? What more did you learn about those types of governments in the discussions you had? Post your thoughts to your original post in the opening forum.

When all the group members have explained their government type and have received the summaries from their other group members, return to your original group and compile your learning to create a quick graphic (use any tool you'd like such as Paint, Comic Life, Cacoo, etc.) that identifies and explains the characteristics for each of the five types of government.

Optional:
After your illustrations are complete, discuss and explain your creations with the members of different groups. Share the graphics on the forum (scan or link it to a new post). What did you agree with? Which graphics did you feel were most clever?
Your Assignment

In order to reinforce the information gathered, you will be presented with a series of different real and imagined examples of the above government systems. You must determine what type of government system the example is discussing and then explain why you believe it is doing so based upon the information gathered previously. Ask your teacher for the format he/she prefers and submit your work below.
